Welcome to Slide Into Safety
Summer is just around the corner and children are excited about being outdoors and being active. Although summertime is fun, it is also known as “trauma season” to many health care professionals. With nearly half (41 percent) of unintentional injuries to children occurring between the months of May through August, summer safety should be on everyone’s mind. Previous Safe Kids Worldwide research indicates that five of the most common causes of unintentional injury deaths in summer are:
- Drowning (increases 89 percent in the summer over the annual monthly average)
- Biking (increases 45 percent)
- Falls (increases 21 percent)
- Motor vehicle passenger injuries (increases 20 percent)
- Pedestrian injuries (increases 16 percent).
Slide into Safety with the Loggers aims to engage children in interactive activities to reduce summer injuries. Program activities are centered on summer safety to provide children with the knowledge to make safe choices and encourages personal responsibility for staying safe.
Slide into Safety is one of the many Safe Kids Coalition - Coulee Region programs that occur throughout the community. The Safe Kids Coalition - Coulee Region works to prevent unintentional childhood injury, the leading cause of death for children 14 and under. The Safe Kids Coalition - Coulee Region is a member of Safe Kids Worldwide, a global network of organizations dedicated to preventing accidental injury. The Safe Kids Coalition - Coulee Region is led by Gundersen Health System.
